One of the worst rotations of intern year (so we have been told) is Wards. They (internal medicine interns) have to do several of these rotations throughout the year which last 3 weeks at a time in the VA wards (stands for Veteran Affairs). They also have University Wards, which is at a seperate hospital and it is similar to VA wards, just not dealing with patients.
For all you non medical folk, wards are the place where patients are admitted to the hospital. It can range from simple infections like urinary tract infections to managing patients while they are receiving chemotherapy. They are not as fun, in my opinion, because of the hours. Matt typically wakes up around 5:45 am and leaves the house around 6:20. He usually does not get home before 8, sometimes as late as midnight. Yuck! Matt says he is learning a lot so that is the positive light at the end of the tunnel.
We are looking forward to a nice 3 day weekend putting together our nursery. He will start clinic for a week (way better hours) then do night float....Eww! Check back soon for pictures of the nursery. It will look awesome, but nowhere complete quite yet! :)
